The Life of Jacob: From Scheming To Believing
#23 in the series Abraham: Father of the Faithful.
Guile: Sly or cunning intelligence with charm
The name Jacob had several meanings.
- Yaaqob: May God protect
- Aqeb: Heel
- Aqab: Watch from behind; Overtake; Trip Up
A birthright meant several things:
- It gave that son a double share of the inheritance of land and livestock.
- It looked to that son to function as the family’s priest—making it his responsibility to shepherd that family spiritually, morally and relationally.
- Additionally, this birthright uniquely carried God’s promise to one day produce the Messiah through this bloodline as well.
Faith is living without scheming.
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
