FEASTING AND FASTING
#9 in our series in The Gospel of Luke
Tim Cartwright
Luke 5:27-39
Feasting
The Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” – Luke 5:30-32
Jesus’ Compassion
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” – Mark 9:36
Saw: Careful and deliberate vision that interprets its object
We instinctively tend to limit for whom we exert ourselves. We do it for people like us, and for people whom we like. Jesus will have none of that. – Tim Keller
Feasting is a natural response to the transformation that Jesus brings
- Philippian Jailer – Acts 16:34
- Samaritan Woman – John 4:28-29
- Zacchaeus – Luke 19:1-10
Fasting
And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” – Luke 5:33
And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” – Luke 5:34,35
