Luke 3:1-20

When John Came

“During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.” – Luke 3:2

How John Came

“And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” – Luke 3:3

What is repentance?

A recognition of sin, leading to godly sorrow, resulting in behavior change

Why John Came

“He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” – Luke 3:7

This is what it looks like when God’s people allow politics to master them spiritually, emotionally, and theologically. But politics is just like any other idol: it doesn’t deliver what it promises. That’s why many politically conscious people you know are also the most anxious, fearful and volatile. The idol of politics promises a feeling of control over this intimidating world. In reality, it amplifies fear by keeping our eyes off the Sovereign ruler of history. – Samuel James
