Stand Firm & United

#9 in the Unbreakable Joy series
Tim Cartwright

Key Passage: Philippians 3:17-4:9

Atrophy: wasting away, weaken and lose flesh and muscle

Life that Abandons the Faith

  1. Set your mind on earthly things
  2. Glory in your shame
  3. Make your desires your god
  4. End in destruction

Refocus your eyes on the future promise

  • Philippians 3:20-21
  • 1 Corinthians 15:53-55

Stand Firm!

Paul patiently and consistently reminded his original audience of the great truths of justification by faith alone and the ethical demands of the good news of Christ Jesus in chapter 3. But he also knew how likely it is for those who profess to be God’s people to waver, so he wrote Phil. 4:1 to make it crystal clear that the responsibility of those called by the Lord is always to stand firm upon the rock. – Ligonier Ministries

Anxiety

  • Philippians 2:28 – Deep distress in the face of difficulty on behalf of others
  • Philippians 4:6 – Distracted self-interest

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. – Philippians 4:8

Reflection

  1. What earthly things am I caught up in?
  2. What do I glory in?
  3. What god(s) have I created?
  4. What is my mind set on?
  5. What am I anxious about that I can give over to God?
What’s your next step?
